Academic Shoot Reflection and Critique

1. One of the challenges I encountered was with lines. Trying to get everything to contrast with itself was hard.

2. I thought about focus the most. I thought of this because I like to take close up photos and it is really hard to get everything to stay in focus.

3. I would probably try to get some pictures more specific to their rule.

4. I would keep the balance and focus the same because I think my photos turned out really clear.

5. I think I will be able to achieve rule of thirds the easiest.

6. I think the hardest will probably be framing.

7. I am still not totally clear on simplicity but I can go to google and research it so I can learn for future photos.

CRITIQUE:

http://abbypsphotojournalismblog.blogspot.com/

1. I like the fact that she put so much effort into her photos as far as focus.

2. Her framing is done very well.

3. One thing that could be improved is the focus of the subject.

DSLR Camera

Aperture settings:
2.8-22

Shutter Speed:
1-1/4000

ISO:
100-25600

ISO

ISO 200

ISO 3200

1. With a higher ISO you get a higher shutter speed and it can freeze a picture and let in more light for the picture to look good.

2. You should always use the lowest ISO to retain the most detail and have the highest quality photo.

3.You should set your ISO higher if you are shooting somewhere dark or don't want to catch a blur.

Shutter Speed

High shutter speed

Slow shutter speed

1.
     A. Slow shutter speed
     B. Slow shutter speed
     C. Fast shutter speed
     D. Fast shutter speed
     E. Slow shutter speed
     F. Fast shutter speed

2.
     A. Fast shutter speed
     B. Fast shutter speed
     C. Slow shutter speed
     D. Slow shutter speed
     E. Fast shutter speed
     F. Slow shutter speed

3.
Shutter priority: When you set this mode, the aperture is automatically set.
Manual: The shutter speed and aperture is set automatically.

Aperture

This photo is taken at F2.8 Aperture

This photo is taken at F 16 Aperture

1.  The human eyes. We should relate this because it works exactly as a lens and aperture work together.

2. The smaller the Aperture the bigger area in focus. The larger the aperture the smaller the area of focus.

3. It impacts the depth of field because it depends on how small and large your aperture is. If it is small, then it will focus on everything. If it is large, it will focus on one object only.

Ethical

This photo was the most ethical because he removed one person. He just wanted to look heroic and removed his horse handler.

Unethical

I think this photo was the most unethical because they manipulated way too much. They took Oprah's head and used another woman's body for their own use without permission.

Photo Manipulation and Ethics

1. The main points I read were that really anything can be manipulated. From red eyes to body shape. The purpose of photo shop is to manipulate images to appeal to the human eye.

2. They think it is used to enhance the validity of stories read or viewed in print and online.

3. You could tweak coloration or smooth out something that looks unnatural.

Academic Shoot

Simplicity
1. For this rule I used simplicity. I followed this rule because my subject is clear.
2. My subject is the guy and his computer in the black DAWGS jacket.
3. I think it might be a little confusing with the background but besides that I think it is clear.
4. I could have made the background less busy.

Balance
1. For this rule I used balance. I followed this rule because the four students are balanced.
2. I have four subjects, which are the four students.
3. I think it was clear what I was using because all of the students balance each other out.
4. I think this turned out well.

Avoiding Mergers
1. For this rule I used avoiding mergers. I followed this rule because nothing is merging.
2. I have one subject, which is the book.
3. It might be a little unclear because of all of the other subjects but it still avoids mergers.
4. I think this turned out well.

Rule of Thirds
1. For this rule I used rule of thirds. I followed this rule because my subject is in the left top corner.
2. My subject is the student with black hair on his laptop.
3. I think it was very clear that I was using rule of thirds.
4. This turned out well.

Lines
1. For this picture I used Lines. I followed this rule because the lines in the back contrast with the lines in his shirt.
2. My subject is Mr. Pierce's shirt.
3. I think with the contrast in the shirt and the background it is clear what I used.
4. This turned out well.

Framing
1. For this picture I used framing. I followed this rule because the closer students are framing the students in the back.
2. My subjects were all of the students.
3. I think this turned out well because it is clear that the students are framing each other.
4. This turned out well.

Academic Community Service

Number Three: Junior Year
The photo shows a student studying. He is in the library clearly studying for some kind of test. I picked this photo because it is a picture that really speaks out to me. The photo shows balance and simplicity.

Filling the Frame

Filling the Frame:
The frame is filled with mostly the girl and what she is doing in her experiment.

Action and Emotion

Action and Emotion:
The action is that of the science experiment. The emotion is the excitement of the experiment.

The Best Story

The Best Story:
This photo tells a story because the girls is interacting with the Earth. The story shows how humans connect with the Earth in more ways than imagined,

Post Shoot Reflection

1. When trying to get the photos of my prompts it was hard to get exactly what I wanted in each picture every time.

2.  I thought of doing balance the most. I tried to get each of my subjects in proper focus.

3. I would change some of the settings on my camera to make my photos less yellow-looking.

4. I really liked how my pictures were focused, so I would do that the same.

5. I achieved balance, focus, and framing.

6. I am interested in the same prompts but I definitely would like to move to something else.

http://screamintornadodolphin.blogspot.com

1. The photos this person took were very detailed.

2. They took photos with more than one technical aspect.

3. One thing that could be changed is some of the blurriness.

The Six Rules

(Rule of Thirds)

I chose this image for rule of thirds. I chose this because the firefighters are clearly meant to be the main point made in this picture and they are put to the far right, which is the rule of thirds.

(Lines)

I chose this image for lines. I chose this because the lines clearly contrast with the man's body to bring him more into focus.

(Balance)

I chose this image for balance. I chose this because the background is mostly the same and the firefighters are meant to be showing a sign of strength, by centering them with that background it is very well balanced.

(Framing)

I chose this image for framing. I chose this because the man in the foreground really frames the plane in the back. You can see his terror and urge to get away at the same time you are seeing why he is so scared.

(Simplicity)

I chose this image for simplicity. I chose this because this image is focused on this one woman that had just taken shelter and was covered in ash. She was clearly in a moment of pure being.

(Avoiding Mergers)

I chose this image for avoiding mergers because this picture is clearly avoiding any clear mergers. It just shows the moment where a man rescued a woman and is comforting her.

Reaction

What I saw through these pictures wasn't just distress. It was grief, loss, anger, so many emotions showed through the click of a camera. After reading the articles on 9/11, I could really get a feel for them and see what they were going through. It was kind of tough going through this because I can't possibly imagine being there in person and having loved ones or friends or even co workers die. What I saw and read was very distressing.

The Camera

1.  Inside a completely dark room, a tiny hole is created in one wall. Through the hole, light is focused and the outside scene is projected upside down on the opposite wall. The hole acts as a lens, focusing and projecting light on to the wall of the dark room.

2. In the 17th century, the Issac Newton and Christian Huygens invented high quality glass lenses.

3. A glass lens, a dark box and a film.

4. Light passes through the lens, into the camera, and exposes the film. The end result is a photograph.

5. With an electronic sensor called a CCD.

6. The camera will completely control flash and exposure. On most cameras this is labelled "auto", on others simply "A". Some cameras only have program. automatic-assist, just point and shoot. Unlike full auto mode, you can usually control flash and a few other camera settings.

7. To attempt to blur out the background, camera will try to use the fastest available lens setting (aperture).

8. To freeze motion, the camera will use the highest shutter speed possible.

9.  It is faster camera response time, more control over focus and encourages better composition

10. Disabled Flash: No flash. There are many cases where you may not want flash at all. The mood of the photograph can sometimes be more dramatic when the natural light is used.

11. Auto-Flash: In most camera modes, Auto-flash is enabled by default and will automatically fire if the camera thinks it needs more light.

12. If there is too much light the picture will be washed out.

13. If there is mot enough light the picture will be too dark.

14. The term "stop" is used in every aspect of photography to represent relative change in the brightness of light.

15. One

16. Two

17. The longer exposures give much more light to the film than a 1/1000 of a second exposure.

18. The shorter exposures give much less light to the film than a 1 second exposure.

19. The aperture works like a pupil.

20. You can control the aperture by setting the "Aperture Opening", also known as an F-Stop.
